On February 23, 2024, on the occasion of Defender of the Fatherland Day, employees of the Russian Embassy in Iceland and compatriots living in the country took part in a solemn ceremony at the military memorial part of the city cemetery "Fossvogur" in Reykjavik. They laid wreaths and flowers at the Nadezhda Memorial in memory of the sailors participating in the Arctic convoys, as well as at the graves of World War II veteran M.A. Mitrofanova and Soviet sailor A. Maley, who died in Reykjavik in 1942.
Among the compatriots who took part in the ceremony were the chairman of the Coordinating Council of Russian-speaking Compatriots in Iceland, the director of the Russian Language School L.G. Rivina and the winner of the Pride of Yakutia award in the nomination "People's Diplomat" Alexandra Argunova-Kyuregey.
The rector of the St. Nicholas Stavropol Parish of the Moscow Patriarchate in Reykjavik, Archpriest Timofey Zolotusky, performed a requiem mass for the deceased soldiers who fell in the battles for freedom and independence of Russia, and also congratulated everyone who came to honor this day of military glory.
Before the ceremony, the young parishioners of St. Nicholas parish, members of the youth patriotic club put the territory of the monument and the military burial in order.
After the service, a festive tea party was held in the premises of the cultural and spiritual center of compatriots at St. Nicholas Parish.
